So Where are the Wild Things? Jul 14, 2008
Warner Bros. Pictures this week took director Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation Where the Wild Things Are off of its release schedule after it was previously pushed back to a fall of 2009 release. So what’s the official word? The Los Angeles Times talked to Warner Bros. chief Alan Horn, who said:
“We’ve given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film,” Horn said. “We’d like to find a common ground that represents Spike’s vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn’t call it a problem, simply a challenge. No one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized studio movie. This is a very special piece of material and we’re just trying to get it right.”
The adventure follows the adventures of Max, a head-strong young boy who leaves home after having a fight with his mother — only to find himself in a mysterious forest bordering a vast sea. Misunderstood and rebellious, Max sets sail to the land of the Wild Things, where mischief reigns. Catherine Keener, Benicio Del Toro, Forest Whitaker, Lauren Ambrose, Catherine O’Hara, Tom Noonan, Michael Berry and James Gandolfini star.

One Sentence Movie Reviews: “Starting Out in the Evening” Jul 02, 2008

Starting out in the Evening (2007): “A dying world should only be saved for what it produced, not how it made us feel.”

Notes: Beautiful, sad movie for grownups about ambition creativity, family loyalty and a dying New York literary culture where books were an entire city’s obsession. We can argue whether that world actually existed or whether it benefited many more than its greatest cheerleaders. But this movie is less about that than about what its like to feel obsolete, in a place that used to breathe a confirmation of your very existence.

If you love books, of course you will love this movie. But you will also if you crave great, understate performances, fine writing and movies with a sense of theater that do also seem flat and literal. Frank Langella and Lauren Ambrose deserve Oscar nominations for their leading roles. It is saying something equally impressive that a when-all-else-fails actress like Lili Taylor gives the least impressive performance in the film.

Starting out in the Evening received an 86% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 4 stars from Roger Ebert. I rented it via Netflix where is also available as part of their Watch Instantly program. It is one of the great overlooked movies of this decade. Please do not miss it.

L. A. Reports Shouting Matches on Set of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ Jun 28, 2008

When last we checked in on Spike Jonze’s issue-plagued film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, Warner Bros. had allegedly ordered a rewrite on the “uncommercial” screenplay after the studio’s other recent kids’ movie, Speed Racer, crashed and burned. On Tuesday, we caught up with Six Feet Under alumna Lauren Ambrose, who plays one of the titular Wild Things, after her debut as Ophelia in the Public Theater’s Hamlet. Initially, at least, she made it sound as though things have not yet settled down: “I’ve been having screaming matches with [co-star] James Gandolfini,” she told us. Luckily, though, “it’s part of the gig … I play one of the monsters,” she clarified. “And we throw Nerf footballs at each other. You know, they’re wild so they’re throwing stuff, and we’re throwing foam to get into the physicality of what the character is doing.”

Ambrose says her vocal work will be synced with the onscreen movements of an “an eight-foot-tall Neanderthal” in a furry suit. “It’s the one that looks just like me with the long red hair,” she said. “It’s uncanny.” As for the film’s purported behind-the-scenes troubles — a problematic lead actor, pants-shittings at test screenings — “I don’t know anything about that,” she said perkily. “It’s going to be super rad.” —Andrew Goldstein
